You can admit it, it happens to all of us...It’s been three weeks, three months (or longer…) since you’ve been in the gym. You got sick, family trouble, you work overtime and those papers that had to be finished kept you away from exercising. And now, the big question is… “How do I start again?”
If you are already in a habit of exercising it comes automatically. You just hit the gym, and there’s no effort required. But after weeks, months, or a year off it can be hard to start again. Here are some tips to get back into your exercise routine after you’ve taken some time off. 1. Make it Fun. Not being able to enjoy your workout will make it hard to maintain the habit. There are many ways of moving your body and exercising, so don’t give up if you think doing crunches or lifting weights isn’t for you. Get a friend to accompany you to workout or make friends in the gym and talk about issues related or unrelated to the gym during your breaks. 2. Mark Your Calendar. The simple habit of drawing “X” on the calendar or logging your workouts quickly shows how regularly you go to the gym. Keeping steady X’s on the calendar, logging your workouts online, or Facebook check-ins are easy ways of motivating yourself. A workout routine should become a ritual. Choose a time of day, cue, or a song that automatically gets you motivated towards grabbing the bag and head out the door to workout. 3. Use Exercise For Stress Relief. Exercise helps relieve stress by releasing endorphins to improve your mood. If you feel tired or stressed, try doing an exercise you enjoy. According to some studies, regular exercise works as well as medication to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and the effects can be long lasting. One vigorous exercise session can help alleviate symptoms for hours, and a regular schedule can significantly reduce those symptoms over time. 4. Don’t Break Your Habit. The simplest way of keeping things going is not to stop. Avoid the long breaks in restarting your fitness habits. Make, and stick to, the commitment of doing some form of exercise every day. By making the commitment to fitness and restarting your workout routine, you are making the decision to add fulfillment, excitement, and regularity to your life, relieve stress, and improve the quality of your life. To put it simply, DO IT FOR YOURSELF! Don’t do it to impress anyone else. Hit the gym with a goal of improving yourself, gaining confidence, and adding positivity to your life… and KEEP GOING, even if the results come slow!
