Increasing your level of fitness means more than going to the gym and dialing in your nutrition...Yes, doing these two things well will increase your physical fitness and make you fitter. But to truly become the best, strongest version of yourself, you need to focus on mental fitness as well.
Here are five steps you can take towards a stronger mind. 1. Set your goals high. Set your goals high, and come up with a plan to reach those goals. Never be ashamed to proudly tell others what you want or what you’re striving towards. Letting others know what you’re striving towards makes you accountable for these goals. Although cliche, it’s true that a goal without a plan is simply a wish. Come up with a plan to achieve your goals. This plan can include small milestones to check off along the way, the daily work you need to put in to get closer to achieving your goals, and a timeline for getting there. Realize that no goal is too big, because even if you fall short, you’ll be miles ahead of where you started. 2. Focus on what you want to happen. Focus on what you want to happen, not what you’re afraid might happen. Your thoughts shape your reality, so what you think manifests itself in your actions. Center your thoughts on the things you want to happen, and use positive self-talk to reinforce these ideas. Positive thoughts promote relaxation, and you’re more able to perform at your best when you’re in a relaxed state. When you focus on what could go wrong, for example missing a lift, your thoughts and actions will be driven by that idea. Focus on the outcome you do want, and your actions will be shaped by those more positive thoughts. 3. Be positive and persistent. Be positive and persistent. Accept setbacks as part of the process, and work through them with a positive attitude. Avoid frustration, panic, and pessimism, and quickly move past mistakes. You won't always set a personal record when you step foot in the gym or go out for a run, and that’s ok! Your life is about more than what happens during your workouts. Stress at home and stress at work can affect your physical performance, even when you’ve been consistent with your workouts and nutrition. Keep grinding, stay positive, and don’t give up. Setbacks are part of the experience. Trust the process and move forward. 4. Never settle for “good enough”. Never settle for “good enough”. Your personal best was only good enough for yesterday. Each day is just a step in the direction of where you ultimately want to be. Your goal every day is to be better than you were the day before. 5. Make good choices. Make good choices and use your time wisely. Creating healthy lifestyle habits may initially be uncomfortable. Choosing to eat a prepared meal while at dinner with your friends and family may be uncomfortable at first. Finding the time to put in extra some extra time at the gym or get in those extra miles may be difficult to do. But you have to believe that you are stronger than temporary discomfort. Decide that the positive changes you want in your life are more important than the discomfort you experience in the beginning, and find a way to stick to them. Have fun. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, have fun and don't forget to enjoy the process! Want to learn more about healthy weight loss through balanced quality nutrition?
