Mental Healthy AwarenessMental health issues are sadly very common. Plenty of cases go unreported and un-diagnosed, as people are scared that they’ll be ridiculed and stigmatized if they admit they suffer with mental health issues. In reality, mental health issues and disorders can manifest themselves in a number of different ways: stress, anxiety, and depression being three of the most common. What’s worse, is that they can actually act as catalysts for one another, so a person may begin by feeling anxious, which will then cause them to become overly stressed, until finally, they may find themselves suffering with depression. Depression is not to be taken lightly as it can cause people to take extreme measures to self medicate in the form of alcohol and drug abuse, and could even culminate in a person tragically taking their own life. The good news however, is that regular physical exercise is considered one of the most effective treatments for depression. Here’s a look at just three ways in which exercise can help banish depression, for good! Exercise And SleepPeople say that there isn’t much that a good night’s sleep can’t cure, and with depression, sleep can certainly play a vital role. When people are stressed and depressed, they struggle to sleep. When we don’t sleep, we look and feel awful, which is also not going to help with depression. Exercise however, helps the brain to produce and secrete hormones, such as serotonin, which actually helps us to feel tired and relaxed when we close our eyes. Not only that, but as exercise expends energy, we feel physically tired. This helps us to get a good night’s sleep, which in turn helps us to think clearer and feel better in the process. Exercise And "Happy Chemicals"Another fantastic benefit of physical exercise, is that once we engage in it, and indeed, for a while after we finish working out, our bodies naturally secrete hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins, which we will call ‘happy chemicals’. They get this name because they help to boost our confidence levels, they make us feel happier, they help us to relax, and they help us to just generally feel more at peace with ourselves. Obviously if you’re feeling depressed, hormones and neurotransmitters that help you to relax and feel happy are going to prove extremely useful. Exercise And Self ConfidenceAs mentioned, endorphins and various other hormones and chemicals produced by the body can help boost self confidence levels as things stand, but, another way in which exercise is able to help boost your self confidence levels is down to the fact that it makes you look better! As you begin losing weight, and maybe toning up and building muscle, you’ll begin to look and feel better about yourself. Over time, other people will notice and will compliment you, which will make you feel even better. You are working from the inside, out. The more confident you feel the less room you have for feelings of depression and anxiety to sneak in. Want to learn more about healthy weight loss through balanced quality nutrition?
