In nutrition, there’s a hierarchy of priorities…You have to build a solid nutritional base before you can get to the top of the pyramid.
First and foremost is calorie balance. The most significant aspect of nutrition success relies on having an accurate balance of calories in versus calories out. If your goal is to lose weight, you must eat less calories than you burn. If you want to gain weight, the opposite is true. The next most important factor to consider is macronutrient balance. Consuming the correct amount of protein, carbs, and fat per day is very important when it comes to diet success. Together, calorie balance and macronutrient breakdown are the most significant contributors to success in diet and nutrition. When it comes to calorie balance and macronutrient allocation, in order to lose weight, you need to consume less calories than you expends in a given day. Once proper calorie balance has been determined, macro breakdown can be considered. Calories come from protein, carbs, and fats. Protein Adequate protein intake is important in order to build and maintain lean tissue. We need to consume adequate protein in our diets, because protein is literally the building block of muscle tissue. Carbohydrates The next macronutrient to consider is carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the first source of energy for our body. Without it, protein from our muscles will be consumed for energy production meaning that our body will effectively eat its own muscles. Fat The final macronutrient is fat. Fat is difficult to digest, slows digestion of other nutrients, and can lower the glycemic index of carbs it’s consumed with. Always remember that calorie balance is king. If you’re looking to lose fat, you must burn more calories than you eat. The opposite is true if you’re looking to gain mass.
