Most people believe consuming fat will make you fat...This statement is not entirely true, nor is it false.
It is absolutely true that fat has more calories per volume than carbohydrates and protein. Carbs and protein each provide four calories per gram, while fat is more calorically dense at nine calories per gram. This means that each gram of fat you consume has more than twice the amount of calories as a gram of carbohydrates or protein. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to know how much of each macronutrient we should be eating each day, and during each meal. During the 1990s food manufacturers began a significant increase in their production of "non-fat" or "low-fat" versions of our favorite foods. Americans naturally began purchasing and consuming more of these "less fat" items than their traditional higher fat alternatives. All the while, obesity rates in Americans continued to rise.
